Bill James Baseball IQ™ Analysis Descriptions

Hit Locator:

Baseball fans often think they know where a player tends to hit the ball. How many times have we heard a friend say, “He always grounds out to second base especially with runners in scoring position.” In the past such statements and arguments were left unsettled because fans didn’t have access to the information needed to visualize hit location. Now the facts are clear.

With Hit Locator, select your favorite batter, the opposing pitcher, and perhaps the pitch type or count and push run. The app will generate a heat map to show you where the batter hits the ball. Some batters are clever enough to change their swing for different ballparks, the short porch in Yankee Stadium for example. To incorporate ballpark effects, simply select a venue and re-run the Hit Locator and you’ll see whether venue changes the batter’s tendencies.

Inputs: batter, batting, pitcher, ball in play, pitch, count, result, venue, season, RISP
Outputs: heat map overlay on venue’s field (to scale), email to a friend
Advanced Option: expand to: all pitchers, all LHP, all RHP, or team vs. all batters, team vs. all LHP, team vs. all RHB

Hit Zone:

How many times have we heard a friend say, “That guy can’t hit a high fastball.” Now you can get the facts. Just select your favorite batter, the opposing pitcher, the type of hit (single etc.), pitch type or count and push run. The app will generate a heat map to show you where in and around the strike zone the batter hits the ball. Some batters are clever enough to change their swing for different ballparks. Simply select a venue and re-run the Hit Zone and you’ll see whether venue changes the batter’s tendencies.

Inputs: batter, batting, pitcher, pitch, count, hit, venue, season, RISP
Outputs: heat map overlay on the strike zone showing the pitch location where the batter hit the ball, tabular output of total hits by type, email to a friend
Advanced Option: expand to: batting team vs. all Pitchers, all LHP, all RHP, or pitching team vs. all batters, all LHB, or all RHB

K Zone:

You’re the pitcher standing on the mound facing a deadly batter. You need a strike out. Contact is unacceptable. Your manager is pacing in the dugout. What do you throw? Where do you throw it? For the first time, fans can visualize the best location and pitch type to get that badly needed strikeout.

Inputs: batter, batting, pitcher, pitch, count, season
Outputs: heat map overlay on the strike zone showing the pitch type and pitch location where the batter struck out, a tabular listing of how the batter struck out (looking, swinging, it or out of the zone), email to a friend
Advanced Option: expand to: all batting team batters vs. all Pitchers, all LHP, all RHP, or entire pitching team vs. all batters, all LHP, or all RHB

Discipline:

Discipline analysis tells us whether a player swings at good pitches or bad pitches in specific situations. This is useful information if you’re the pitcher, the batter or the batting coach for that matter. Let’s say for example, the pitcher is ahead in the count. Discipline analysis gives a visualization of pitch location where the batter swings. In other words, “if the pitcher throws pitch type X to location Y, will the batter swing?”

Inputs: batter, batting, pitcher, pitch, count, hit, venue, season, RISP
Outputs: heat map overlay on the strike zone showing the pitch location where the batter swings at the ball, tabular output of total swings, swings at balls, swings at strikes, email to a friend
Advanced Option: expand to: batting team vs. all Pitchers, all LHP, all RHP, or pitching team vs. all batters, all LHB, or all RHB

Pitch Locator:

As fans, we love to guess where and what the pitcher is going to throw in certain situations. Now we have the facts. With over 4 years of pitch-by-pitch data, simply punch in the situation (pitcher, batter, pitch type, count, outs, RISP, venue) and get a view into where the pitcher will spot the ball. With the count full against a particular batter, for example, where in the zone does Pitcher A place his fastballs?

Inputs: batter, batting, pitcher, pitch, count, hit, venue, season, RISP
Outputs: heat map overlay on the strike zone showing the pitch location, tabular output of total pitches, % in the zone and % out of the zone, email to a friend
Advanced Option: expand to: batting team vs. all Pitchers, all LHP, all RHP, or pitching team vs. all batters, all LHB, or all RHB

Pitch Profile:

Some pitchers are sneaky and like to mix things up with different pitches. Other pitchers may have a limited repertoire. But we’re all human. There are trends in our behavior. Now we can expose those trends. With over 4 years of pitch-by-pitch data, simply punch in the situation (pitcher, batter, count, outs, RISP, venue) and get a view into what the pitcher will throw. With the count full against a fastball batter, for example, does the pitcher tend to bring the heat or throw the hook?

Inputs: batter, batting, pitcher, pitch, count, hit, venue, season, RISP
Outputs: bar graph showing the % breakdown of pitch types thrown a given situation, tabular output of total pitches, % in the zone and % out of the zone, email to a friend
Advanced Option: expand to: batting team vs. all Pitchers, all LHP, all RHP, or pitching team vs. all batters, all LHB, or all RHB

Batter Comparison:

Time and time again we hear, “my guy is better than your guy.” Now fans can prove it. Batter Comparison enables back-to-back comparisons of two batters over time. Choose a statistic and the timeframe and get the hard cold facts. Then email your buddy to settle the point immediately.

Inputs: batter, batting, statistic, time frame (up to last 4 seasons by month)
Outputs: line graph of each player plotted on the same graph, tabular output behind the graph, email to a friend

Match-Ups:

Baseball is a game of match-ups. Certain players often become the nemesis of others. Critical game decisions are made based on these important facts. For example, should the pitcher be pulled now or after the next batter? Match-Ups analysis is a powerful tool that provides a lifetime view of how a roster of batters has performed against a specific pitcher both individually and collectively – even if a batter faced the pitcher while on another team. Match-Ups also incorporates Bill James Temperature statistic that helps fantasy players understand which players are currently hot or cold.

Inputs: pitcher, batting team
Outputs: overall: BAA, K/BB; individual batters: Temperature, H-AB, AVG, HR, BB, K
